Dark Rune in WoW Forever: uses, recipes and price

A Dark Rune trades health for mana on its own cooldown and feeds eight end-game tailoring and blacksmithing recipes. What it does, who buys it, its price.

In short

  • A Dark Rune is a Classic Era trade good carried into Forever: uncommon, item level 55, stacks to twenty, and used from the bags it restores 900 to 1,500 mana at the cost of 600 to 1,000 health on a two minute cooldown.
  • Nothing makes it and no vendor in the scan records sells it, and no Forever scan has recorded a source or a listing for it yet.
  • Eight recipes consume it: the Felcloth Bag and the Runed Stygian belt, boots and leggings in tailoring, and the Darkrune helm, gauntlets and breastplate plus Persuader in blacksmithing, between two and twenty runes each.
  • Its price will be set by stack-buying crafters rather than by casters using one at a time, so hold runes in stacks and sell them the week the first Darkrune set appears on your market.

What a Dark Rune is

A Dark Rune is a trade good carried into World of Warcraft: Forever from Classic Era. It is not one of the new Forever items; the client files it under Trade Goods, in the Other bucket where the odd reagents live, at item level 55 and uncommon quality. It stacks to twenty, which is the first clue that it was built to be consumed in quantity rather than kept.

What makes it unusual is that it does two different jobs. Used from the bags, a Dark Rune restores 900 to 1,500 mana at the cost of 600 to 1,000 health, on a two minute cooldown. That is a mana potion that charges you in health instead of gold, on a two minute cooldown of its own, which is why casters with long fights ahead of them learn its name early. The trade is only sensible when a healer has you covered or the fight is nearly over, but in those moments it is the difference between a cast and a wand.

The second job is as a reagent. Eight end-game recipes across tailoring and blacksmithing list it, some in quantities that make a single craft worth a stack or more. A caster sees a consumable; a crafter sees a material; the auction house sees both of them bidding on the same listing. That double demand is the whole reason the item matters to anyone who trades.

The client also gives it a vendor pair: 80 silver to buy and 20 silver to sell back. Treat the buy figure as a reference, not a plan. It tells you what the game thinks the rune is worth, and it sets the deposit a seller pays to list one, but nothing in the records so far shows a vendor actually stocking it.

Where Dark Runes come from

Nothing in the Forever catalog makes a Dark Rune. There is no recipe with it as a result, no profession that produces it, and no vendor in the scan records that sells it. It arrives in bags from the world, and the list below is where players running the AHledger addon have actually recorded it coming from, most often first. It updates as new scans arrive.

No scan has recorded where Dark Rune comes from yet. Players who run the addon with loot tracking on fill this in; the list appears here and on the item page as soon as it exists.

If that block says no source has been recorded yet, that is the honest state of the data and not a gap in the item. The beta that has been running since September is a low level population, the busiest zones in the records are the starting areas, and a level 55 trade good belongs to content almost nobody in the beta has reached. The rune will appear in the records when the players who find it run the addon with loot tracking on, and that is a launch story rather than a beta one.

This page does not guess at the source. Every origin on this site comes from a scan, so the first zone and the first source you see above will be the first ones a Forever player has actually recorded.

What Dark Runes are used for

Two professions take the rune, and both of them take it late. The live list of every recipe that consumes it is below; the shape of the demand is this.

  • Tailoring. The Felcloth Bag at skill 220 takes two, which is the cheap end. The Runed Stygian set at skill 260 is the expensive end: six for the belt, six for the boots and eight for the leggings, twenty runes for a tailor who makes all three.
  • Blacksmithing. Everything sits at skill 280. The Darkrune Gauntlets take six, the Darkrune Helm eight and the Darkrune Breastplate ten, twenty-four for the set. Persuader, a weapon, takes twenty on its own, a full stack for one craft.

Add those up and a single crafter working both ends of the list needs more than sixty runes. That is the number to hold in mind when a caster asks whether they should use one or sell one. The caster's use is worth one rune every two minutes; the blacksmith's use is worth twenty at once, and the blacksmith pays the price that clears the shelf.

Nothing produces the rune, so supply cannot be scaled by crafters deciding to make more. It arrives at the pace players find it, and the recipes that want it are the ones high-skill crafters reach last. Both of those facts push the price up once the first characters hit 60, which is why this item is worth understanding before anyone can buy one.

What a Dark Rune is worth

The table shows the current median listing price on each market that has a scan with Dark Runes in it, with the 7 and 30 day medians beside it. A market in Forever is one ruleset and faction in a region, so a Horde PvP figure and an Alliance Normal figure are different auction houses with different crowds.

No market has a scan with Dark Rune listed yet. The item page fills in as scans arrive.

Through the October 2026 beta no market has listed one, for the reason given above: the beta population is not yet at the level where the rune turns up, and nobody lists what they do not have. So there is no beta price to quote and this guide will not invent one. What can be said is how the price will form, because the pieces are all in the catalog.

The floor is the vendor sell price of 20 silver, which nobody rational undercuts. The reference above that is the 80 silver vendor buy figure, which also sets the listing deposit, so an auction house price below it is a seller who wants a fast sale rather than a market signal. The real price will sit wherever the two buyers meet: casters paying for mana by the single rune, and crafters paying for the Runed Stygian and Darkrune sets by the stack. When those crafters arrive the stack buyer sets the price, because one Persuader clears twenty runes and one caster clears one.

A thin shelf makes the 7 day median swing. Watch the listed count in the table rather than the median alone: a median that doubles on three listings is one seller, while a median that doubles on forty is the market moving. The prices guide explains why the median, not the cheapest listing, is the number to trade on.

Find it, use it, or sell it

If you find one. Do not vendor it. Twenty silver is the worst outcome a Dark Rune can have, and even in the first week of a fresh market there will be a caster who pays more than that for a mana source on its own cooldown. Hold runes in stacks and post them when the listed count on your market drops, which is when a crafter has just cleared the shelf.

If you cast. Price your own use against the market before you pop one. A rune used at full health in an easy pull gives back mana you would have regenerated anyway; a rune used on a boss when the potion cooldown is already spent is worth every copper. If the market median is high, sell the stack and buy mana potions, which do not cost health and which alchemists will be making in bulk.

If you craft. The Felcloth Bag is the cheapest way into the rune market and the one with the widest set of buyers, since bags sell to everyone. The Runed Stygian pieces and the Darkrune set are a different proposition: dozens of runes per set, so buy when the 7 day median is below the 30 day median and the listed count is deep, and never buy the full stack for Persuader at the top of a swing. The crafting desk puts the reagent cost against the result for every recipe in the list above once the rune has a price.

If you buy to resell. This is a cross-faction and a timing item more than a bulk one. The only lasting price gap in Forever is between the two factions, and an item found by one faction's groups and crafted by the other's blacksmiths is exactly the kind that opens one. The no realms guide covers why that gap exists and what the neutral cut does to it.

A watchlist entry on the Dark Rune will fire the first time a scan lists one on your market, which for this item is the signal that end-game play has started. The Tuesday Ledger will pick it up from there.

What changes on 5 November

Everything above describes an item that has not yet traded, because the beta economy that has been running on the US markets since September has not reached the content that produces it. Launch on 5 November starts the clock. A fresh server has nobody at 60 on day one, so for the first weeks the rune will stay off the auction house entirely, and the first listings will come from the fastest levelers, who tend to be the same people who know what the item is worth.

Demand arrives in two waves. Casters in the first end-game groups will buy single runes as soon as they appear, and the price in that window will be set by a handful of listings and will look expensive. Crafters come later, when tailors reach 260 and blacksmiths 280, and that is when the stack buyers push the price up for good. The best time to hold runes is between those two waves; the best time to sell a full stack is the week the first Darkrune set appears on a market. The EU markets will run the same curve from the same hour, and the first week guide covers how the rest of the catalog behaves while the rune is still waiting.

Common questions

What does a Dark Rune do in WoW Forever?
Used from the bags it restores 900 to 1,500 mana at the cost of 600 to 1,000 health, on a two minute cooldown of its own. It is a mana source that charges you in health instead of gold, which is why casters keep a stack for long fights.
What is a Dark Rune used for in crafting?
Tailoring uses two in the Felcloth Bag at skill 220 and six, six and eight in the Runed Stygian belt, boots and leggings at 260. Blacksmithing uses six in the Darkrune Gauntlets, eight in the Darkrune Helm, ten in the Darkrune Breastplate and twenty in Persuader, all at skill 280.
Where do you get Dark Runes in WoW Forever?
No recipe makes them and no vendor in the scan records has been seen selling them. No Forever scan has recorded a source yet; the origins list on this page fills in from player scans as soon as one does.
How much is a Dark Rune worth?
No Forever market has listed one yet, so there is no beta price. The floor is the 20 silver vendor sell price and the reference above it is the 80 silver vendor buy figure. Once crafters reach the Darkrune and Runed Stygian recipes, stack buyers will set the price, and the table on this page shows the current median on each market from the latest scan.
Can you buy Dark Runes from a vendor?
The client gives the item an 80 silver vendor buy price, but no vendor in the scan records has been seen stocking it. Treat that figure as the number that sets the listing deposit, not as a place to buy.
Should a caster use Dark Runes or sell them?
Price your own use against the market. A rune used when the potion cooldown is already spent on a boss is worth every copper; one used on an easy pull returns mana you would have regenerated anyway. When the median is high, sell the stack and buy mana potions, which cost gold rather than health.
