In short
- Cerulean Dye is an alchemy product new to Forever: an Alchemy 10 trainer recipe takes two Frilled Lichen and an Empty Vial. No vendor sells it.
- Six Filigreed gowns at Tailoring 40 take two each, the Pristine and Shadow circlets take four, and the Woolen Reagent Bag, Stormrider Leather Armor and SAF-T Tabs take one.
- In the beta economy it traded between one and a half and six gold a unit, and on every market the 7 day median sat above the 30 day median: supply, which means herbalists, is the bottleneck.
- Alchemists should make it from the first hour; tailors should buy their stack before reaching skill 40.

What Cerulean Dye is
Cerulean Dye is a crafted trade good that World of Warcraft: Forever added to the game. It is uncommon quality, it has no use on its own, and it is one of the most searched new items in the whole catalog for a simple reason: nearly every one of the new tailoring and leatherworking gear lines calls for it, and almost nobody who needs it knows where it comes from. It is not sold by the tailoring supplies vendor next to Blue Dye and Bleach, which is where most people look first. It is an alchemy product.
In Classic Era dyes were vendor items, a few silver each, and no one thought about them. Forever moves the better dyes into the player economy. Cerulean Dye is the first and most widely used of them, and it is the clearest example of how Forever makes professions depend on each other: a tailor cannot finish a Filigreed gown without an alchemist, and an alchemist cannot make the dye without a herbalist.
Where Cerulean Dye comes from
It is made by alchemists from a trainer recipe at skill 10, and from nothing else. No creature drops it and no scan has recorded a vendor selling it. The recipe takes:
- Cerulean Dye · Alchemy 102 × Frilled Lichen, 1 × Empty Vial
Two Frilled Lichen and an Empty Vial make one dye. Frilled Lichen is itself new to Forever, a herb that herbalists gather in the early zones, and it is the real constraint on supply: the vial is a few copper from any vendor, and the recipe is in every alchemist's book from the first hour, so the price of dye is the price of lichen plus whatever the alchemist wants for the trip. The recipe stays orange until skill 50 and goes grey at 90, which means a leveling alchemist makes a lot of it whether or not anyone has ordered any.
No scan has recorded where Cerulean Dye comes from yet. Players who run the addon with loot tracking on fill this in; the list appears here and on the item page as soon as it exists.
If you are a tailor or leatherworker and you need a stack, do not wait for a vendor to start selling it. Buy the dye on your market or buy Frilled Lichen and ask an alchemist in your guild to turn it; the recipe costs them nothing but a vial.
What Cerulean Dye is used for
The dye goes into more recipes than any other new reagent at its skill level. The full live list is below. The demand comes in three shapes.
- The Filigreed gowns. Tailoring at skill 40 has six new gowns, the Filigreed Shadow, Silky, Pearly, Flame, Pristine and Shining Gowns, and every one takes two Cerulean Dye. Each gown is the first piece of a different cloth line, so a tailor who wants to open any of the lines buys dye at 40, and one who opens all six buys a dozen.
- The pieces further up the lines. Boots at 45, gloves, leggings and circlets up to skill 90 keep calling for it, in larger amounts. The Pristine Circlet at skill 85 takes four on its own; the Pristine Circlet guide prices the whole piece.
- Leatherworking, engineering, and bags. Stormrider's Leather Armor at Leatherworking 40 takes one, the Woolen Reagent Bag at Tailoring 35 takes one, and the engineering SAF-T Tabs at skill 1 take one. The bag is the sleeper: reagent bags sell to every crafter on the server, and that is a lot of single units of dye.

Almost all of that is gear, which does not get used up. Demand therefore rises when a wave of tailors reaches skill 40 and falls once they have opened their lines, and it rises again at each new content build that adds pieces. The one steady draw is the reagent bag.
What Cerulean Dye is worth
The table shows the current median listing on each market with a recent scan, with the 7 and 30 day medians beside it. Each row is a different auction house: a market in Forever is one ruleset and faction in a region, and the Horde PvP price and the Alliance Normal price are set by different crowds.

Through October 2026 the dye traded between one and a half and six gold a unit on the US markets, with 25 to 75 units listed at a time. That is high for a reagent made from a low-level herb and a vial, and the 30 day medians tell the story: on every market the 7 day median sat well above the 30 day median through mid-October, which means the price was rising, not settling. The PvP markets paid roughly twice what the Normal markets paid for the same dye, with the Horde PvP market the most expensive of the four.
A rising price on a trainer recipe with a cheap herb means supply is the bottleneck, and the bottleneck is herbalists. Early in a Forever economy most gatherers are miners and skinners, because ore and leather have obvious buyers; Frilled Lichen is a new herb with no Classic Era reputation, and many herbalists walk past it. That gap closes as the lichen price rises enough to be noticed, and when it does, the dye price follows it down.
Make it, buy it, or sell the herb
If you are an alchemist. This is the best early money in the profession. Make dye for skill from 10 to 50 and sell every unit in stacks of two and four, which is what a gown or a circlet takes. Past skill 50 keep making it as long as the median is more than twice the cost of two lichen, which in the beta economy it has been all month. Price against the PvP market if you can reach it; a cross-faction or cross-ruleset trader should look at the four medians above before listing anywhere.
If you are a herbalist. Pick the Frilled Lichen. Two of them become a unit of dye worth several gold, and the herb itself sells to alchemists who have worked that out. Check the lichen's own page for whether the herb or the dye pays better this week; the gap moves.
If you are a tailor or leatherworker. Buy early and buy in one go. The dye is the most expensive reagent in a Filigreed gown and in a Pristine Circlet, and the price has been climbing. Set a watchlist alert at the 30 day median and buy a stack when it fires. The crafting desk shows whether the finished piece clears the cut on your market after the dye is paid for.
The prices guide explains why the median and not the cheapest listing is the number to trade on, and the Tuesday Ledger tracks the new reagents week to week.
What changes on 5 November
The prices above are from the beta economy, a few thousand players on the US markets over September and October. Launch on 5 November starts every market, US and EU, from nothing at the same hour, and the dye will be one of the first new reagents to find a price. Alchemists have the recipe at skill 10, which is the first evening; whether they have Frilled Lichen depends on how many herbalists pick an unfamiliar herb in a hurry. In the beta they did not, and the dye spent its first weeks rising.
The demand arrives with the first tailors at skill 40, which on a fresh server is late in launch week. Six gowns at two dye each and a bag at one is a lot of dye for a market that has only had alchemists on it for five days, so the squeeze the beta showed in October will be sharper in November. If you are an alchemist, dye is the thing to make from the first hour; if you are a herbalist, Frilled Lichen is the herb to pick on the way to 50; and if you are a tailor, buy the dye for your first gown before you reach 40, not after. The first week guide covers the same curve for the rest of the catalog.
Common questions
- Where do you get Cerulean Dye in WoW Forever?
- Alchemists make it from a trainer recipe at skill 10 with two Frilled Lichen and an Empty Vial. No vendor sells it and nothing drops it; if you are not an alchemist, buy it on the auction house or buy the lichen and ask an alchemist to turn it.
- What is Cerulean Dye used for?
- Tailoring takes most of it: two in each of the six Filigreed gowns at skill 40, more in the boots, gloves and leggings further up, and four in the Pristine and Shadow circlets at 85. Leatherworking uses one in Stormrider Leather Armor, tailoring one in the Woolen Reagent Bag, and engineering one in SAF-T Tabs.
- Why is Cerulean Dye so expensive?
- Because Frilled Lichen is a new herb that few herbalists pick. The recipe is cheap and every alchemist has it, so the dye price is the lichen price plus a margin, and through October 2026 it rose on every market.
- Is Cerulean Dye the same as Blue Dye?
- No. Blue Dye is a vendor item carried over from Classic Era. Cerulean Dye is a player-made Forever reagent, and the new recipes ask for it by name.
